Feedback
The strongest part of our film was definitly the flash backs that were recognised by all the clas. Many also commented on the editing techniques and how they worked well in creating atmosphere and tesnion.
However many also commented on the first part of the sequence in which the news reporter is summarising what has happened. Although they said it helped explain the storyline the sound was unclear and had unwanted noises in the background. they also criticised the reaslism of the news reporter. From this we went away and researched different news prgrammes to see what it was we needed to do to make them look more realistic. We found that along the bottom of the screen there were other news bulletins and when talking a corresponding picture would appear on the side of them. We took these ideas and i then incorporated them into our report.
We also made other changes to the sequence and then showed it to friends aged on average of 17 as this is our intended target aduience.

Treatment
We then fade to a black out and the camera fades back to a long shot of a wall, of which is covered in newspapers all featuring the kidnaps. A series of super imposed shots then appear on screen which close ups of the previous news stories.
The camera then fades out to another long shot of a hooded man staring at the paper covered wall. He is tense and still apart from some slight movement of him touching / admiring the papers. This is done to introduce the audience to the kidnapper who is one of the main characters in out film.The camera zooms in to the back of his head and snaps to a series of flashbacks. These are made up of both the kidnapper running through a wood and different children he has kidnapped.
During the past 2 scenes backing music will be played.The camera then blacks out again taking us in the title sequence. This is made up newspaper articles in which our names are edited into. The camera pans across the appropriate article, then freezes and the name will fade to red. This will be repeated for all four group members (Caroline Lauren Natalie and Robyn)
The sequence finished with an extreme close up of the kidnapper’s eyes and a voice over is in the background. (This will consist of a few line read by the kidnapper)
Risk Assessment
Script
Scene 1;
Fade to female news reporter who is reading about the latest kidnapping.
This will be filmed whilst being played back on t.v
News Reporter
Good evening, I am Penny Hartley and this is your evening news.
Another girl is missing in the Yorkshire are, making this the fifth
disappearance of young children in the last 2 months
Nobody can certify who is responsible for these disturbing
disappearances and police have said they feel there is an obvious
link between all five kidnaps.
We now go over to John, our correspondent in Otley where the latest
kidnap took place.
Camera fades to black
Scene 5;
Extreme close up of the kidnappers eyes. Script is read as a voice over.
Kidnapper:
The look in their eyes, I can feel the fear.
I just cant help myself. Im loosing control......(laugh)
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
down will come baby cradle and all.
Camera fades to black

Shoot List
After finishing all of the planning for our Opening Sequence we had to create a shoot list which would help us with the following;
The day of the shoot
Which scenes would we be shooting
Who would be needed
Infomation on the location/studio
The props
The actors/ actresses involved and
The camera equipment
Below is a picture of part of our shoot list. We have aimed to complete the filming over a course of 4 days and although we will try stick to this it may be it takes longer due to any set backs such as lighting issues, re-takes ect.

Location
We took pictures of the all different places and then as a group decided which locations we thought would be most appropriate for our film.
The majority of our filming takes place in a small dark room, however it is just one of the walls
of the room that will be seen on video;

Auditions
The auditions were held for the two main characters in the opening sequence; The News Reader and The Kidnapper. The audience consisted of them reading a several lines from the draft scrpit to see how they acted infront of a camera.Some of the people who tried out were asked to repeat the scene once appropriate feedback had been given. After all the auditions had finished we then had edited the clips together and sit down as a group and discuss who we thought would fill the part the best.
By auditioning people it ment we could see a wide range of people and then choose those who best suited the part for our opening sequence.
Below are some screen shot of some people who auditioned but unfortunatly we didnt think they would fit the part of the news reader or the kidnapper.
Name; Mary Abberton
Role; News Reporter
Reason for rejection; Mary was one of the first to audition and one of the last to be rejected, however dispite her excelent performance marys age was the main reason to her rejection.
Name; Emma Talbot
Role; News Reporter
Reason for rejection; Emma was one of the people who were asked to repeat the scene. Our cast manager gave he some points in which she could improve her performance, however after a second take we found her performance just the same, including the faults we first pointed out. This is reason Emma was rejected.
Name; Natalie Bates
Role; News Reporter
Reason for rejection; Natalie is part of our production group and for that reason alone we decided that it would not be suitable for her to take part in the acting when she would be needed behing the camera, something we felt was more important
Name ; Sam Drake
Role; Kidnapper
Reason for rejection; Although sam played this role very well at the audiction, we felt his age caused a problem. To make the film realistic we need to have realistic characters, and therefore due to his age was the reason for his refusal

Step Outlines
The step outlines are short summaries of each scene, something we will take when doing our filming to help the director along.
Each step outline included the following ;
Slugline -Using the abbreviation ‘Int.’ or ‘Ext.’ to show internal or external locations.Including a short one sentence factual description of the location. Include an indicate of the time of day/night, for example with ‘Day’
Endpoint of the last scene - A one sentence summary of where the action left off in the previous scene
Characters involved in the scene - a list of the character names
Point of scene - a sentence to explain what the audience is meant to learn or understand about people, places, themes etc in this scene
Scene description -
1. A scene is determined by the ending of a time or location – for example a cut to another place, or when someone walks from one room to another is classed as a ‘scene’.
2. Describe the setting and what goes on in it.
3. As it is a description of action and should not contain dialogue – where characters speak, it should be explained what they say or talk about, not scripted.
4. You can explain particular camera shots, transitions etc, but this may not be necessary at this stage..

Storyboard
It was Carolines responsibility to make sure it was all complete in time for us to film.
This is a very important stage to our planning process as when we come to film the opening sequence we can refer back to this when filming.
It includes a sketch of the scene and below is the relevant information. This consisted of the shot number, a brief explanation to what is happening, the camera work, dialogue, the sound, editing and shot duration that would take place in each scene.
The Storyboard is what something we will take when doing our filming to help when we need to refer back to our plan. It will also allow us to compare the final result with our first ideas, which will enable us to see what worked and what didnt.
After sketching this storyboard we are now going to complete a photographed storyboard so it is much clearer for us to follow.

Further Research
We created a poster on editing, camerawork, audience, mise en scene and lighting found generally in the opening sequences of films with a crime/thriller genre;
We then chose to look at the opening sequence to 'Se7en'. With this we looked deeper into what it was made this opening sequence so well known. By looking at this film we could take some ideas from it and add our own ideas towards our Opening Sequence. Below is copy of my research poster :

Summaries of group research
Dark hours
Green mile
Kiss the girls
Scilence of the lambs
Kill Bill Volume 1
Feardotcom
Se7en
The Dark Knight
We also did some research into film openings that a genre specifically of either crime or thriller. Helping us focus on just one of the genres in more detail. They are as follows;
Saw 2 (Thriller)
Jaws (Thriller)
Oceans 13 (Crime)
Below is a table of what we found. We did this to help compare the films more easy. It was also a neat way of displaying our results;

Summary of all three films
1. How narrative, characters and genre are established
2. How the sequence uses 'micro' features, such as camerwork and editing to do the above
After watching the opening sequences of Feardotcom, Oceans 13 and Kill Bill Volume 1, i have decided to summarise the 3 films together to see how they establish what i am focusing on and to help me with my opening sequence of a Crime Thriller.
- In all the opoening sequences that i have watched we meet at least one main character
- A title sequence is used within the first two minutes of all the opening sequences
- We find out what the film is called in all the opening sequences
- There is clues throughout all of the opening sequences of what the genre is
- We learn in two of the films what kind of storline it has (Feardotcom and Kill Bill-volume1). In Oceans 13 we kind of understand what the storyline will be about but it is not fully set out for us.

Ocean's 13
During the whole of the opening sequence we never find out;
Who they are?
What their names are?
What they do?
But the opening sequence introduces them as the main characters and a situation that one of them is in.
Most of the opening sequence is in darkness to emphasis the fact that the first character that we meet isn’t supposed to be where he is. The first main character played by Brad Pitt appears from the top of the screen on a bungee wire, which has obviously come from the ceiling. He is wearing dark clothing and a balaclava, so as at first we don’t know what he looks like or who he is.
The setting of the opening sequence is what looks like a lab, but the characters that are in it are all dressed in black and don’t look as though they shouldn’t be there. They could be spies, detectives or criminals but we never find out throughout the whole of the opening sequence.
Diegetic sound is used throughout most of the opening sequence, such as clicking, sound of buckles, footsteps and Brad Pitts phone ringing and him talking to someone. Upbeat music is used while Brad walks towards the plane parked outside.
As Brad Pitt starts walking through, what looks like a lab, a tracking shot is used to follow him into another room where other people in the room are with torches searching for things. A tracking shot is used so they audience can make out where he is walking towards, if they had used a point of view shot we would still see where they were going but it wouldn’t have been as effective of as watching him walk somewhere.
The lighting used through the whole of the section when they are in the lab is darkness apart from the light of the torches and the slight light creeping in from the windows.
When he reaches the separate room where all the other people are he reaches towards a machine which lights up. A medium shot is used for a view of the side of him looking towards the screen, until his phone rings and it pans across to the front of him and he answers his phone.
Brad: ‘Yep’, (takes of the balaclava and we finally see who he is)
‘Where is he?’
‘Gotta go…’
The music starts up. It is upbeat music, giving the feeling of an action film. The instruments used seem like saxophones and drums, the music is Non – diegetic as the character can not hear it while he is walking out of a building but we as an audience can.
As Brad Pitt walks out of the glass building there is a low angle shot of him making him look powerful to the audience. He is wearing a smart suit and carrying a briefcase showing that he maybe has a powerful or important job.
A crabbing shot is then used of him walking towards a plane. This sequence is at night so it is dark outside with the light of the city in the background behind him. It looks as if he is in New York. The lighting used while he is outside walking towards the plane is low key lighting.
While he is walking towards the plane the title sequence starts. The name of the film and the name of producers (Warner Brothers) are what appear on screen in a normal small font in red and white colour which is a contrast to the background they are on. The titles wipe on and off screen sideways simply.
The plane that he walks onto is posh and looks very expensive. It is a small private plane with modern interior which obviously means that whoever owns it has a well paid job and is rich, either Brad Pitt or George Clooney who we meet later.
A medium long shot is used as he walks into the main part of the plane where another man is sat and an over the shoulder shot is used to introduce the new character (George Clooney).
Both of the men start talking about something (maybe a mission?) but we don’t really know what it is. While the two men are talking the camera work used is shot reverse shot so we see the expression of the each of the characters when the other is talking to them. The camera focuses on the character that is talking. The two men seem to be colleagues; they are both wearing suits and are talking about something to do with some business that needs to be talked about.
Like most opening sequences of films, not a lot of speech is used so we don’t know what is happening until the film starts up properly, this is done to grip the audience that are watching so they want to know what else is going to happen.
After both of the men have stopped talking there is shot of outside the window of the sky as the plane sets of, so we know they are changing location. The shot of outside has low key lighting which is a contrast to all of the lighting used before, it is very difficult for us to make out what is outside. The lighting used through the whole of the opening sequence changes with each scene that he is in.
In the opening sequence of Oceans 13 we can not specifically tell that it is a Crime film but by the characters, setting and the situation that the main characters are in it seems like the genre of a Crime film. In addition we seem to meet two of the main characters and learn what kind of situations they get involved with. Them been detectives or criminals is what they seem to be involved in.
Feardotcom
The images of the computer parts are superimposed over each other and are fussy on screen giving an eary feel to the title sequence. The parts of the computers are easy to notice, and are used to help us understand what the film is going to be about.
The title ‘FearDotCom’ pans across the bottom of the screen in white writing and it uses a plain black background to give contrast. The title then fades off while the next scene appears on screen.
The sound in the title sequence builds up through the scene, using drums and drones of sound. The non digetic sound is eary and sets a sinister mood for the following scene. The font used for the title sequence is long a jagged helping the audience with the feeling of Thriller.
The sound then fades out from the title sequence and is replaced with the sound of thunder and rain. This is done to take you out of the build up and put you straight the scene with the old man and makes you feel alone and aware of what is going on screen. Digetic sound is used all the way through the rest of the opening sequence as it is what we can hear but also what the character would be able to hear, i.e. the rain and lightening.
The first scene flashes onto the screen with a bright light but it then drastically changes to darkness. During the whole scene of the opening sequence darkness is used the give the eary and sinister mood of the film. An old man is walking down the stairs to what looks like an abandoned train station. The old man is very tense and looks to be scared of something as he is dripping with sweat. By using the darkness all the way through the scene it makes you unaware of what else is on the screen or what is following the old man. By using darkness it helps makes the audience tense of what may appear on screen because both the characters and audience are not able to see what is on set.
The rain used is typical throughout the opening sequence is typical for a Thriller which helps the audience with the genre of the film and making the scene cold and wet.
The lightening used helps give brief glimpses of what is actually on screen and creates tension as it is allowing us to see what is hidden on screen and the rain make is wet and damp setting the mood of a thriller. The slight glimpses of light also helps us see the expression on the old mans face, he looks very scared and distressed not knowing where he is or what is going on around him.
The camerawork used throughout the opening sequence of ‘Feardotcom’ is not complexed but at the same time not simple. The camera moves about a lot giving action to the scene. The busy camerawork used makes us want to concentrate more on what is going on because of the dark lighting aswell.
The opening sequence after the title sequence is a close up of someone’s feet and then tilts up to a close up of and old mans face, his nose is bleeding but we never find out why and he look in shock and seem upset about something (maybe the place he is in?).
By using a close up it makes the audience feel trapped and unaware of what is going on in the environment giving the audience a similar feeling of walking into the darkness. When he reaches half way down the stairs the camera shot changes to point of view and another man walks past him in abit of a rush and looking in fear but we still don’t know where the stairs are leading to. As the man starts walking down the stairs there is a low angle shot which is usually used to make the people look powerful but from the look on his face he seem to be very stressed and doesn’t look to be in control of anything. When man reaches the bottom of the stairs and there is a high angle shot, now making him look vulnerable the high angle shot is of him stood in the middle of a large space which looks like an abandoned train station, with abit of a gothic design. The light fittings used have very dim lights placed in them and there are shop designs along the wall which looks like there were shops once replacing what is now smashed window and boarded up doors.
The grey and cold hard feel of the surfaces enhance the atmosphere making it eary. He drops his glasses and looks very confused, lost and worried with panic about were he is. The atmosphere of the underground gives the idea that he shouldn’t be there and creates more tension and suspicion on the opening sequence.
A point of view shot is used as the old man makes his way towards the platform giving the audience the feeling that it is them walking towards the platform.
A strange looking white ball passes by him while he is stood at the edge of the platform which is out of place and as soon as the white ball lands on the rail tracks a little girl dressed in a white dress and pumps with blonde/white hair follows the ball onto the tracks. It looks as though a ghost has appears on screen.
In the opening sequence of Feardotcom is not recognizable as a Crime thriller but we can tell by the lighting, sound and mise en scene used that it is a Thriller. In addition the young girl with the white hair and wearing a white dress bouncing the white ball looks like she will be playing a significant part in the film.
Kill Bill. Volume 1
The screen fades to black and text appears on screen in white;
‘Revenge is a dish best served cold.’
By using this quote it grips the audience and gives them an idea that the film is going to be about revenge. This is ironic as we learn what happens in the rest of the opening sequence about why the girl gets shot.
The sound used at this point is heavy breathing and whimpering of someone who seems to be in pain, scared or upset. The heavy breathing and whimpering creates suspense as we don’t know who it is until they appear on screen, this sound is digetic as the character and the audience can hear it. No soundtrack is used at the beginning of the opening until the title sequence appears at the end of the first two minutes which then turns to non digetic sound.
There is a quick cut from the plain black screen to an Extreme Close Up of a women laying on the floor, with black and white lighting as if it is old, showing as I said before that it is probably in the past. She is lying on the floor with a cigarette butt next to her on the right and bits of glass.
There is around ten seconds of her lying on the floor crying, which is used to emphasis that she is distressed and upset and create an atmosphere for the audience.
The women lying on the floor has a veil on her head showing that she may have been getting married but we never find out where she is or why she is there or if she actually did get married.
The crying and whimpering builds up more and more and gets more aggressive as we hear heavy footsteps walking along a wooden floor. We can hear the footsteps before we actually see them walking towards the women on the floor.
There is a quick cut to a Close Up of some cowboy boots and a panning shot is used to follow the person walking towards the women. It looks as if it is a man walking towards her, but we never see his face. There is no urgency in his footsteps which shows that he is not in a hurry which is strange as she has blood all over her face and sounds like she is in pain, maybe he has something to do with her been hurt.
There is another quick cut back to the women and the man places his foot next to her in the bottom right corner which shows that he is standing over her. The camera shot is again an Extreme Close Up of the women’s face showing her emotion.
The man starts to talk to her in a calm voice;
‘Do you find me sadistic?’
Meaning does she think he likes pain.
He shouldn’t be asking questions, he should be helping her which again builds on the story that he is not there to help her and has something to do with her covered in blood.
The man then starts to wipe her face with a handkerchief that has a named embroidered on to it – ‘Bill’. This is strange affection towards her as he doesn’t seem to be helping her.
Throughout the whole of the time that the man arrives on the scene the audience is given clues to show us why he may be there and who he is, for example, not rushing to help her or the handkerchief that has the name ‘Bill’ embroidered on and also when he is wiping her face we can see his hands that a wrinkly showing that he may be old.
He then starts to talk to her again teasing her and making her more and more upset and angry and leaving her in pain.
‘I bet I could fry an egg on your head right now.’
Which helps reveal that she is angry and that he knows that she is angry and wants to make her angry?
Also when ‘Bill’ is talking to her he calls her ‘Kiddo’ as if they know each other giving us more clues towards the revenge part that was shown in text at the beginning of the opening sequence.
We then find out that it is over something to do with a baby as she says to him urgently,
‘It’s your baby’
We now know how they know each other, but while she is in the middle of saying this he shoots her in the head.
There is a loud gun shot and it quickly cuts to black screen again to the title sequence.
The title sequence consists actor’s names and the producer of the film. The last part of the title sequence is the title of the film which appears 2 minutes after the film has started to give the audience time to understand what the film is about:
‘KILL BILL – volume 1.’
When the title of the film appears the soundtrack, ‘You shot me down’ starts up, this is ironic as ‘Bill’ has just shot the women in the head.
In the opening sequence of Oceans 13 we can not specifically tell that it is a Crime film but by the characters, setting and the situation that the main characters are in it seems like the genre of a Crime film. In addition we seem to meet two of the main characters and learn what kind of situations they get involved with. We also learn that the film is about revenge from the first opening seconds of the film with the quote that appears on screen.

Textual Analysis
I focused on the following to help with my research:
1. How narrative and character and genre are established.
2. How the sequence uses 'micro' features, such as camerawork and editing to do the above.
To to this I chose the following films to watch;
Feardotcom
Oceans 13
Kill Bill - Volume 1
I chose to watch Feardotcom as one of the opening sequences of a film as i believe it uses the title sequences very well and creates alot of tension and understanding in the first two minutes of the film.
I believe Oceans 13 was a good choice of an opening sequence to watch as it is very different to the others because it is just a Crime genre rather than Thriller-Crime.
In addition i thought Kill Bill would be a good choice of opening sequence to watch as it would give us a different idea of how to start off our opening sequence.
Results from the Questionnaire
Here are the results that i collect from the 10 questionnaires that i handed out.
By writing up the results it was easier to show the rest of my group what i had found.
From the results we have chosen:
- The age range for our target audience, been 15
- The genre of the film, been Crime Thriller
- The storyline of the film, to revolve around the idea of a serial kidnapper
Questionnaire
In the research i took the responsibiltiy of writing a questionnaire and handing it out. I handed out 10 of the questionnaires on what ypes of films people enjoy yo watch most out of Comedy, Thriller and Sc-fi
From these result we could plan out own movie to fit the genre with the widest target audience.
