Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

When filming our Preliminary Task as a group we didn’t really know what we were doing when shooting the footage but also with editing as none of us had any experience in editing.
The Preliminary Task had to be shot twice as we had never used cameras before and the camera angles we used when uploaded onto the computer didn’t look to follow the continuity rule.
The short task had to be a conversation between two people so we had to use turn taking camera shots.
When filming it the second time I had a better plan of what the camera angles should be like and was able to create a storyboard of what would be in the short task.

Since filming the Preliminary Task I have learnt how to follow the continuity rule and I have been able to explore with different types of camera angles, for example, using the dolly to create a panning shot.
Before we filmed the Preliminary Exercise we didn’t know anything about been able to use different tripods to create different camera shots, whereas now I have had the experience with three different types. Also the editing programme became easier for us to use.

Within the Preliminary Task we had to follow the 180 degree rule which is a basic guideline when filming a media product. The 180 degree rule suggests that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary line then it becomes a reverse angle and makes the shot look odd.
I think that we followed this basic rule well and our Preliminary Excerise worked well and flowed well.

Match on action was also another element that we had to learn how to film within the Preliminary Task. This shot was alot harder to achieve compared to the 180 degree rule as the door could be seen as opening twice when editing the scene.
Match on action is to connect two shots cut together and having a character finish an action in Shot B begun in Shot A.

Shot Reverse Shot was the final element we had to work upon within the Preliminary Task. This is when there is an alternation of two shots to show and interaction or conversation between the characters. For example Shot A is speaking and Shot B is the character that she is speaking to.

Within our actually final media product we havent included any of the preliminary excerise as ther wasnt any converstaions between main characters ect. We did however use a close up of the kidnappers hand, which was used within the preliminary task where the character opens the door. Although if we had carried on filming the camera shots we used within the preliminary would surely be present.
